The Premier League Season is already here, and football enthusiasts from all parts of the world are impatiently waiting to see their favourite teams win the trophy. We also have some candidates for the Golden Boot and Golden Glove, which will be won by the top goal scorer and best goalkeeper by the end of the season. The one who wins the Golden Boot must be a Goal Machine in every match. The English Football League’s highest level is what we refer to as the Premier League, and it has been conducted every year since 1992.
So, let’s look back on the history of the greatest achievements that the world witnessed in the Premier League. Keep reading to learn about the top players holding the record of most goals in Premier League over the years.
The first name I want to add here is Alan Shearer, known as the England legend. Shearer not only has an all-time top score of 260, which is the highest number of goals hit by a player in the history of the Premier League, but the legendary football player also held the record for the most number of goals scored within one season together with Andy Cole of Manchester United as they both have hit 34 goals in a single season.
To talk more about Alan Shearer’s winning season with 34 goals, we need to talk about the winner of the previous season, Andy Cole (1993-94). One interesting fact you would love to know about the top scorer duo is that during the 1993-94 season, Alan scored 31 goals and lost the Golden Boot to the former Manchester United legend Andy Cole. In the following season, he was able to get the Golden Boot along with the top scorer title for the season.
Alan Shearer, fondly called Smokey by the fans, is a top player, being the only one who was able to score more than 30 goals, not just once or twice but three times in every season. The first was in 1993-94, the 2nd time in 1994-95, and the 3rd was in the 1995-96 season. One major change happened during the 1995-96 season as the number of matches was reduced to 38, just like how it is today. But before that, it was 42 matches in a season with 22 teams.
In the 1995-96 season, there were only 20 teams, and Shearer still managed to score 31 goals, setting the benchmark high as no one was able to break this record for a very long time. The fan favourite, Cristiano Ronaldo, managed to match the tally by scoring 31 goals in the 2007-08 season. Then, Luis Suarez of Liverpool did the same in the 2013-14 season. But even they were unable to set a new record.
Of course, they were on the list of the highest scorers in English Championship, but Shearer was untouchable until Mohamed Salah from Egypt scored 32 goals for Liverpool in the 2017-18 season. Hence, Mohamed Salah was credited as the highest goal scorer in a single Premier League after his achievement. The other top players who scored 30 goals in a single season are Kevin Philips of Sunderland in the 1999-2000 season then we have Thierry Henry of Arsenal in 2003-04. Robin Van Persie also did this in 2011-12, and Harry Kane in 2017-18 and 2022-23.
But now we have Erling Haaland, who broke all the former records in the 2022-23 season, making him the season’s best player. He became one of the most celebrated players of the season by hitting the goalpost 36 times in a single Premier League Season, which is simply remarkable. The record-breaking event happened during the 33rd match of the 2022-23 season, where we saw Erling Haaland’s second-half strike against West Ham.
That’s how the Norwegian scored his 35th goal in the Premier League season. Erling Haaland eventually finished with 36 goals, beating the legendary players’ record of 34 goals. The second position in the top scorer’s list was secured by Harry Kane, who has six fewer strikes than Haaland. So, that was a brief flashback with the top scorers throughout the season, and I wonder if we will be able to witness more record-breaking events in the 2023-24 season.
To give some updates about the 2023/24 season, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland is leading this season as well with 14 goals. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has secured 2nd place with 10 goals scored till now. The 3rd spot is taken by South Korean player Son Heung-min as he scored 9 goals for his team Tottenham Hotspur. In an earlier season, he was sharing the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah as he scored 23 goals. But after that, he was unable to break the record as he could only hit 10 goals for the season. I wonder if he will be able to live up to the expectations of his fans in the 2023/24 season.
The 4th top scorer of this season is Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United, who has scored 8 goals. The player seems to be in good form this year, and I am looking forward to the rest of the matches. Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa has also hit 8 goals, sharing the top 4 position with Bowen. We have 4 players who have scored 7 goals till now, in 5th position: Alexander Isak of Newcastle, Dominic Solanke of Bournemouth, Callum Wilson of Newcastle and Hwang Hee-chan of Wolves.
Then again, we have 4 players who scored 6 goals in the season. Evan Ferguson of Brighton, Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United, Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea and Bryan Mbuemo of Brentford are standing in the 6th spot for top scorers as of now. There are more players who have scored 5 goals for their teams, and they also have the potential to rise as top scorers during the season. I will keep sharing the latest updates about the 2023/24 season of the Premier League, and it will be interesting to see how the remaining matches will unfold.
